Female contraception
One tablet per day, with your main meal
You may experience some bleeding while using Desogestrel but you should continue taking it as normal.
Follow printed instructions provided with this medication
On the 1st day of your period you should take Desogestrel. You can also start of days 2 to 5, but in such cases you should use an extra contraceptive method (e.g. condoms) for the first 7 days of starting.
If you used the COC pill, ring or patch correctly and consistently, you should start Desogestrel after your last active pill (missing out the inactive pills, or pill-free, ring-free or patch-free break.) You will not need to take extra contraceptive precautions.
You can also start this pill the day after the tablet-free, ring-free or patch-free interval. However, in those cases you should use an extra contraceptive method (e.g. condoms) for the first 7 days.
You can stop taking it at any point and start Desogestrel right away, without having to use any extra contraceptive precautions.
You should start using Desogestrel when you next injection would be due, or on the day your implant or IUS is removed. No extra contraceptive precautions required.
Do not use in the case of hypersensitivity to the active ingredient or to any of the additional ingredients.
Do not use if there are any known or suspected sex-steroid sensitive malignancies or undiagnosed vaginal bleeding
Bleeding irregularity, nausea, acne, mood changes, weight increase and breast pain
Maize starch, povidone K30, d-α-tocopherol, silica, colloidal anhydrous, silica, colloidal hydrated, stearic acid, hypromellose, polyethylene glycol, titanium dioxide (E171), lactose monohydrate, soya oil
You will need to ensure you are not already pregnant, and this may have to be excluded with a pregnancy test.
While you’re on the pill – you should go for regular cervical smear tests and you should also check your breasts or nipples on a monthly basis for any changes such as lumps or dimpling of the skin.
If you’re new to taking contraceptives or new to using Desogestrel you may be better suited to taking no more than a 3-month supply, so you can see if it suits you and whether you experience any side effects.
A 6 months supply is more suitable if you’re already using Microgynon or have used it in the past.
You can also go to your GP for contraceptives.

Your contraceptive protection should not be affected if you take the late pill immediately, and keep taking your pills at the usual time. That may mean taking 2 pills in one day.
You may have lowered your contraceptive protection, so you should take the missed pill as soon as you remember, even if it means taking 2 pills on the same day or time. You should also use extra protection (e..g condoms) for the next 7 days.
If you missed more than 1 tablet, you don't have to take the earlier missed doses.
There is a risk you may fall pregnant. You should seek advice from your doctor.
it may not have been completely absorbed and you may be at risk of falling pregnant. You should follow the advice as explained in the "What to do if you miss a pill" section above.
