Oxytetracycline is an antibiotic used to treat mild to moderate acne and rosacea in suitable adults aged 18 years or over. It should not be used in combination with other antibiotic treatments.
Oxytetracycline treats the bacteria that cause spots allowing the skin to heal.
Suitability criteria
Mild to moderate acne vulgaris
Drug Warning
Follow printed instructions given with this medicine
Space the doses evenly throughout the day
Keep taking this medicine until the course is finished, unless you are told to stop
Take this medicine when your stomach is empty. This means an hour before food or 2 hours after food
Warnings and Contraindications
Do not use in the case of hypersensitivity to the active ingredient or to any of the additional ingredients.
Not to be used in kidney or liver impairment, systemic lupus erythematosus, pregnancy and breastfeeding women, porphyria, patients receiving vitamin A or retinoid therapy.
Photosensitivity reactions may occur in hypersensitive persons. If you are susceptible to this, avoid direct exposure to natural or artificial sunlight and discontinue therapy at the first sign of skin discomfort.

Common Side Effects
Gastrointestinal irritations including nausea, abdominal discomfort, vomiting and diarrhoea

Dose
500 mg twice daily usually for 6–12 weeks for Rosacea, may be repeated where necessary
500 mg twice daily usually for 3-6 months, but may be necessary to continue for longer in some cases
Other information
Oxytetracycline can be used in combination with some topical acne treatments, including Acnecide to achieve better results. Please discuss with your prescriber
